I've done it on both 25k/yr and more than 7 times the amount. 40-45 hrs/week of work.

In other words...it depends on the couple....but maybe someone will give you splitup of regular costs and you can decide on if it meets your needs.

Hi 7wonders:

1) Define happiness. Doyou mean material happiness? A person may not be satisfied with a 100K salary :)

check this link out: http://www.ncwcnbes.net/htmdocument/reportnewpovline/newpovline_e.htm
It defines canadian poverty lines. This is the income cut off. In theory if one lives with less income, they would be defined as low income or poor. There is a chart on this page that describes minimum income required to survive, depending on the city size (its interesting to read)

If you want to keep up with the joneses, you may find that no salary will be enough. You need to decide what your goals are, and limitations.

2) The average workweek for many occupations is 37.5-40 hours a week. This is your standard 8-4 or 9-5 day. Of course some occupations like IT you work a lot of overtime :)

first u never get satisfy with ur salary and ur work, and u always think that u can earn more then present.
but what I have calculated is, that if u + ur wife earn between

50k to 70k /year = you are an average person and have to compromise on lot of things, especially if u have childrens.

70k to 1.20/year = you live happy but u r not satisfy, so u wants more money. but i think a couple earning this much should be more then happy in canada. but forget of having the cool gadgets, cars and a big house even in this salary.

1.5 to 2/year = u should be more then happy if u reach this level, but still don't dream of ferrari.

above 2 lakh a year = there are lot of people in this range in canada, but mostly are business mans. so if u can do this mark then u can dream of having the best things at ur home and in ur pocket. but still not ferrari.........hahahaha

above 5 lakh a year = now u will be at top of world, traveling first class in planes, going on maybach to office, having a vacation home and all.............. but here the thing matter is how manage ur money. and an intelligent person will invest in future by saving little for his home........

rest it all depends on ur life style. and remember that there are still the taxes left which u have to pay to govt................

Incidentally have you read " The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari" ?

This book tends to seperate the issue of "money" and "happiness". This popular "equivalence" of money and happiness is, as pointed out by morning_rain, the unstated assumption in the original question by 7wonders.
