Recently I came across "salary guide" generated by a well known IT recruiting agency. The range that I found for my level was not at all in sync with my company's current pay range.
I had to ignore that report.
Either the report is invalid. Or my company pay structure is way too low.
I need help.
monster.ca or salaryexpert gives range for position like "Programmer I", "Data Analyst III" ...
That does'nt help me.
Does anyone have any link or any source by which I can get the market pay range ?
Something that is detailed up to skill and position.
Something like :
Java Developer ... Salary range: Number1 to Number2
(does'nt have to include anything within "Java"
SQL Server DBA ... N1 to N2.
Oracle Developer .... abc1 to abc2
You are experiencing is expected. All the salary comparisons sites mostly don’t have up to date data. Some salary information may be misleading. Don’t always trust what you read on those websites. One example is http://mcpmag.com/salarysurveys/ MCP Salary Surveys. Some of the salaries mentioned on this page are total out of proportions. They need some serious reality check.
Salary range will vary on following factors IMHO
-Location
-How big is the company you are working for?
-Your experience
-Need of your employer for a person with same experience as yourself
-Educational Credentials (US-Canada degree / Other Countries degree)
-Professional Certifications
-Type of Work (Permanent/Contract)
Most salary comparison sites are not advanced enough to create a comprehensive analysis. So DON’T get disappointed if you find yourself in low paying range.
Try to find out passively how much your colleagues are making for same kind of work that you do. (You can’t really approach and ask anyone their salary. That would be considered bad manners )
Don’t compare the salaries of Permanent Employee to Contractors. Contractors will mostly always be paid more than permanent employees.

I dont know abt the private sector, for federal govt jobs, the salary range is given with the poster.
Right now entry level engineers make abt $50k-$55k since they get terminable allowance.

l5a,
I was recently talking to some HR experts who work for companies like Bayer(Canada), Molson, Royal Plastics and one thing that came out in regards to the salary survey is something which I would like to share it with you.
Many a times when the survey questions are sent to the HR departments for their response, the payroll guy or the top guy who has the full information does not have time to fill out the questionaire. He/She usually passes this to the rookie in the department, who may more spare time to do this work. This person who fills in this salary survey does not have full information and when they approach the Seniors for data, they tend to quote data off their head or spur of the moment. Sometimes company give out the top salary in the company or exaggerated salary so that they can be considered to be par with competition.
Do not give much importance to this salary survey data. They are misleading or at times misrepresenting information.
The best way is get friendly with the payroll guy and get a non-commital but vauge quote from him over beer. Cheers!

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
