I would like some suggestions on purchasing a new mattress. We bought ours from IKEA. But somehow we are used to a firm mattress, usually in India we all are used to a firm one and so I am noto comfortable sleeping in this one. I think I am developing a back problem because of this.. Can some tell me would a mattress with springs be good or one with foam and coir or are there any available with our Indian type cotton (rui)?
Thank you for your responses.
I like Ikea, but I would never buy a a peice of furniture (especially one that will be getting a LOT of use) from there purely for the fact that, well, lets face it, the quality just isn't there. It's ok for smaller items, such as kitchenware and other such accessories.
Anyway, back to the point, I had the same problem until we got a our new mattress in the hard foam...I cannot remember the brand name off the top of my head right now, but it might be a Sealy, anyway, you normally get to choose between a soft mattress or hard mattress. We chose the hard.
The only suggestion I have is to take the Mattress back to Ikea (if poss) and buy a new one - not from Ikea!
Or you could always sleep on the floor

Hi,
The Spring (coil) mattresses are ok "Only" where the number of coil count is more in it. the more the count the better is the mattress. (Reasonably a good one is with at least coint count > 580 ).
"Tempurpedic" mattress or "Posturepedic" mattresses are said to be good for painless sleep and comfort but are very expensive (if you have money and can afford, then go for it.)
BUT the cheapest and best alternative is "FUTON" mattresses.
they almost resemble "Indian" made with your term "rui" style mattresses and very good, durable and comfortable as well.
Do not throw your current mattress , just buy a "Futon" and put on top of your current mattress and you will like it.
I have had back pains for a few years ..and we bought a serta back logic Gold (with all the coils etc) mattress thinking it would be the best.. we were wrong. within a year it was sagging badly ! it also was painful to sleep on it. It was a $2000 waste.
My physiotherapist recommended a foam mattress. Not memory foam..just your basic FOAM.. at a level 4 or 5 thickness. Since I got this mattress (king size approx $900) my back has done really well..and its VERY firm.
You can get one from a basic foam store.. in any size and thickness. put it over your box spring.
I love this mattress...it will definately feel like the indian firm mattresses. Futons are very basic..and will not last very long. Though they are cheap.. you want durability.
good luck.

Hi
To solve your back pain problem, try this one.
Buy a 2 inch quilt and put it on the wooden firm floor. Sleep on this quilt with out pillow. instead of pillow you can use a small blanket under your head. Try this one, you can feel a lot better.
Have a good sleep.
PMA.

PMA is right, more to the liking of Swami Vivekananda though.
Very effective, unless you are not used to it at all.
Thank you guys and girl.
I saw a few sites. Sealy is expensive but I guess that the price one has to pay for a comfortable sleep. but are srpings good? Brown girl, you are using sealy, is it coils + foam? I have heard similar stories on futon. The best are our Indian style cotton mattresses. May be I can think of getting one or two here by sea cargo?
I am used to very firm mattress. So I guess visiting ‘Sleep Country’ shall give me an idea of the options available to me.
Yes, I did try sleeping on the floor with a quilt. Boy, that was good. But cannot continue in the long term. But that also meant a strain on the knees everytime you want to get up. So am going to buy a new one but after a careful search. After all health is wealth.
