Hi

I desire to settle in Canada, and as life has it for most of us, one cannot feel settled until one has a fixed source of income.

Browsing thru the posts, I gather that, though one can get any job within a short period of time, upon landing, however, such jobs are, most often, not in-line with one's real calling.

I am a IT person with 15yrs experience (with abt 4+yrs in the US) and for past 2+yrs I am working as a SAP MM consultant (not certified).

I have absolutely no idea of job scene in Canada, nor I have any first-info-reporter friend with tips and tricks.

I would rely almost entirely on CD members to guide me.

Query is, can I get a job offer from a Canadian firm? How does this "arranged employment" option work? Does it work like US H1B visa ?

Or Is it that - the only way is to first land, get a "tide-over" job, meanwhile hunt your desired calling and hope to get lucky?

would much appreciate guidance here

thanks :)

jrc,
there are quite a few SAP openings in Canada, mostly in Alberta. If you have Oil Industry experience (SAP) or be able to gain that experience it should come very handy.
Go to Workopolis.ca, monster.ca and see the numerous jobs posted in SAP.
Overall I think for SAP professionals the situation is good.
One word of caution: The salary level in Canada is way less than in USA. So be prepared for lesser salary.

There is a basic culture difference between US and Canada. Unlike in US where most of the job offer are done over phone, in canada you have to go through a Face to Face integview if the company is hiring you for permanent position. How ever there are instances where people have got offers from outside canada.

Thanks Ritu :) specially for the US vs. Canada difference.
But can US experience be counted equivalent to Canadian experience?
Since having no canadian experience is considered a prime minus.

My processing will take about 3yrs.
I hope IT job demands increase as years pass!

I know an associate who landed last year (May/2005) in Canada and got a SAP SD job in DOMTAR Paper Pulp Company after 4 months.
I wish to get a SAP certification also before I land.

Salary - can I hope to get CAD 3500 +, I have myself+wife+son+my father to support ?

I have read in other posts that abt CAD 2500 pm expenses happen
for family of 5 adults with car + 3BR in Toronto
Mine, I would like to guess ;), should be abt CAD 2000 in a 1BR
+ car in Toronto / Vancouver area

I dont know the income-tax scene also, so if it is 30% of salary
then 3500 - 30% tax = 2450, then I have to live life smaller than
2000, possibly 1700 and not in any metro but in suburbs, take public transport and cut corners whenever, wherever possible.

All this when I am still a SAP consultant in canada.

But if I am a cab-driver, then I barely survive, prudent that I
do not have my family with me and pray and hope to get a SAP
consultant's job. Maybe do not dream of settling in canada at all.

Are these guesses nearer to real-life situations OR should they
be different?

thank you again

Hi,
Do not loose heart like this. I am in Canada since last 5 years. So, SAP functional consultant do not get such a less salary like CAD 3000 per month. Going rate is around 5000 CAD , so you are left with around 3500-3700 CAD per month(after IT deduction) which is quite Middle class salary in Canada. Even your wife can do something if no family/health constraints & chip in 1000-1200 per month.
Also, on other hand Taxi drivers earn more then 4000-5000 per month( all take home)

Thank you Mr. desi_driller for the encouragement :)

One query here - after getting PR and living in Canada for
say 3 or 5 yrs, can I come back to India.

If I get PR, do I lose Indian citizenship?

thanks again

Getting a PR does not effect your Citizenship at all. You maintain your Indian Passport.Even, if you get your Canadian Citizenship( by living 3 out of 4 years), you are free to travel anywhere with the word with proper visa. So, where is the problem.
