I know in britain 'on the dole' is sometimes used to make fun of the 'dolee'.
Dont know about North America.
Isnt EI fund separate from Social Security?

Is EI only related to lay-offs?
I mean a company can force an employee to resign for any reason. I am sure it is not difficult to find out a reason. How is the employee going to prove that he has been asked to leave?
Thanks & rgds.

Let's make India a better place !
"Is EI only related to lay-offs?"
Technically "regular" EI is available only to people who suffer an "involuntary loss of employment". But according to HRSDC you can claim EI if you were forced to resign because of pressure from the manager or coworkers or one of the 17 other acceptable reasons.
In a NON-UNIONIZED workplace the boss gets no advantage by "forcing you to quit" than "laying you off". Except for the severance benefits (2 weeks pay for every year of work) the boss saves no money. In most cases the boss prefers layoff to other options unless there is personal enimity.
I have a contract job for more than 8 months, still 3 months to go.As NYD has mentioned 5% of the salary goes in EI.
As i am in contract and not a regular employee am I entitled for EI after my contract ends in dec'05.
Any person with this same situation. Yours information on this will be highly appreciated.

Hello,
EI is available only to those who have contributed to the EI fund. Thus, only employees who have regular payroll deductions for EI qualify for EI.
Those who are on contract work basis are technically independant contractors;not employees. So there is no deduction for EI for such contract employees. Hence these people will not be able to claim EI benefits. This is the main drawback here for people who find work as contractors.

Advice is free – lessons I charge for!!
Yes Chandresh I am also in the similar situation where my pay cheque has EI deduction for last 9 months.
With this I think i will be eligible to get EI after my contract is over.(ofcourse this will be my last priority if all tries goes in vain)
Thanks
