EI definitely is not welfare. Like CPP you pay for it bigtime when you are employed. (5% of your salary)

EI is actually a subsidy of seasonal workers (and their employers) by regular employees. (Take a look at how regular benefit duration is calculated. It is "optimally designed" for 7 months work and 5 months EI)

I ****think***** that there is welfare fraud being done by Chinese immigrants. They OWN condos and are on welfare. (don't ask me how....My guess is they own the condo "benami";) They seem to be driving pretty good cars too.

My opinion is that welfare is easy to get in this place if you know how. But I think the money is insufficient (I think it is 1000 bucks for a family) for the TRULY NEEDY. I think this system is designed for the folks who take the balance from their trust funds...

EI is to cover layoffs.

NA,

I meant does it come with the some sort of 'stigma' .
I know in britain 'on the dole' is sometimes used to make fun of the 'dolee'.
Dont know about North America.

Isnt EI fund separate from Social Security?

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.

theres nothing wrong with EI(which lasts for a maximum 8 months..afaik). We pay for it. My ex boss used EI to get educated and move to bigger and better things. A lot of ppl from my company...have gone on EI after layoffs etc. I dont think theres any stigma attached tothe same...nor there should be.

I think there is.........A lot of people have had a hard time finding a job once they go on EI. I know a couple of them.

That necessarily does not mean they did not have a hard time finding it.
Although I also know a few who have had no problems finding ajob.

I know them quite well and the fact that they were on EI did not come up during the interviews. Infact one of them was brought in from TO while he was on EI.
