Most important is the resume , as why some people get jobs and other do not. Please go over your resume and put in Canadian Format. It is very important how you word it in order to get Interview calls. My friend changed the resume for some one and he started getting many calls(and before that no one was calling him). So dont use your Indian resume Change it, Reword it according to Local format.
Good luck
Jay
Been there, done it as soon as I came to Canada.
There was not much re-wording I had to do with my resume which I had in India except that I showed a lower position in my jobs in India. All it helped me was to get an entry-level position in my field.
yeah, however your suggestion is valid. Most of them do get it done thro' agencies.
Thanks & regards.

Let's make India a better place !
Hi Rajan,
I went thru' the sites of the oil companies that u mentioned and did find a couple of listings that matched my husband's work ex. Now the problem is that we have only applied for immigration and r in India, do u think those guys wud go in for HRDC approval if we fit the profile ? Or wud they go in only for local labour ? Nothing is clearly mentioned in the site.
I did read a couple of posts where people have got work permits while still in India and was wondering if this was a possibility ?
Please let me know... Thanks.
It is very very unusual for canadian employer to go to HRDC and get the approval for you but you never know....most employers go for local labor....local means within the same city, not within canada....this is how i personally feel but i could be wrong
Rajrani,
I do know of people who come here on work visa for 1 year or so. But mostly they are people who might have come since the company here has some contract or an office in India or other country as the case maybe. Most of the times they might not consider but give it a try.
Who knows, your husband might get a call.
It is difficult though.
Thanks & regards.
Rajan.

Thanks Rajan and Neeraj. I'll try and put in a few applications. Lets see how it goes.
Yep, resume and coverletter are really EXTREMELY important in getting yourself to the point of an interview. If you haven't had atleast 10 years of experience, keep your resume SUPER SHORT! By that I mean it should be only ONE page. I've had work experience of 8 years and mine's only 1 page. You don't have to put every single job you've had on there. Just the ones relevant to the position you're applying for.
Spelling and grammar are very integral to your resume and cover letter. It has to be correct and of Canadian standard to up your chances.
And don't be afraid to go all out bold with the cover letter. Make it pretty (if you're doing a manual drop off as opposed to emailing it), and make your key points stand out so the person HAS to turn over and look at your resume. After weeks and months of searching and 'whoring' my resume around, I just started experimenting with it for spite. My resume is very sleek but the cover letter has colors and has a unique design. And suddenly one day people started taking notice of it and making calls.
I asked two of the recruiters as to what made them pick that one and they said because it "stood out" and I just had to take a look at it. (Of course my qualitifications matched the job requirement, but so do a 1000 other ppl's!) If you don't feel comfortable making your resume unique, just make sure it's free of errors and make it look sophisticated so it stand out. If yo're going to drop it off, use GOOD, resume paper.
And don't forget to make phonecalls to the agencies where you've dropped off your resume or have registered. Do so every week religiously. So that anytime they have a position open, they have ur name in the back of their head. That trick definitely goes a LONG way.
If worse comes to worst, just ask the people on this board to proofread for you or give suggestions. I'm sure most of us here would love to help out that way. (Including me.) But at the end of it all, make sure u have a professional resume/coverletter that makes YOU feel good about yourself.
