January 9, 2009 (Surrey, BC) Non-profit association, South Asian Family Association (www.safa.ca) is pleased to announce that their 2010 celebration of "International Women's Day: Sharing the Strength from Within" will occur on Sunday March 7, 2010 beginning at noon at the Simon Fraser University, Surrey Campus. This is the second year for this celebration which consists of a marketplace, information presentations from various support and community agencies in the Lower Mainland as well as 3 panel discussions and a keynote speech.
The 2010 theme for this IWD celebration is "Sharing the Strength from Within" and therefore iconic South Asian women will be sharing their thoughts and experiences in the three panel discussions of Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Women in Non-Traditional Roles, Women in Business (entrepreneurs) and Coming to Canada which will focus on newcomers and issues that they are faced with. Panellists include Order of BC recipient Shushma Datt, entrepreneurs Bina Gill, Scholar and news journalist Prabhjot Kahlon, CEO of Seeds: Monika Laul Verma and others.
Delivering the keynote speech is Monika Deol; media personality, mother and community volunteer. Born in Punjab, India , she emigrated to Ontario as a young child with her family. She was studying towards a B.A. at the University of Winnipeg when she started working part-time in the entertainment industry. Her first show, Night Moves, aired on the CTV affiliate CKY-TV in Winnipeg. From 1986 to 1996, Monika was a host and anchor on Citytv and MuchMusic in Toronto. In 1997, she relocated to Vancouver and became the first evening news anchor of VTV (now CTV Vancouver). Monika was Chair of the Advisory Board to Channel M when it made its successful bid for a new multicultural television station in 2000. In 2002, she took the late night anchor desk at Citytv Vancouver. Outside of television, Monika is a contributor to the book, "Between Interruptions: 30 Women Tell the Truth About Motherhood" and is a committed volunteer, serving as a director on a number of charitable boards. Monika will deliver "her story" at the midpoint of the day's festivities. She joins the company of Senator Mobina Jaffer and Jinny Sims who delivered key addresses at the 2009 celebrations.
The 2010 IWD event remains a free, public event through the support of the Province of BC, Simon Fraser University and the City of Surrey. All are encouraged to attend for a day of inspiration and information. The first 200 guests to arrive will receive a gift from SAFA.
