Helping Women find work

YWCA Steps to Employment

Help wanted signs are everywhere, but jobs still remain outside the reach of some women in Vancouver. “Finding and keeping a job can be hard for women dealing with challenges such as single parenthood, English as a second language or lack of work experience,” says YWCA Steps to Employment Manager Darcie Gabruck.

Located on Vancouver’s East Side at the corner of Commercial Drive and Broadway, YWCA Steps to Employment is a 12-week program for women who face multiple-barriers in their search for work. A combination of individual and group support helps women develop self-confidence, learn about workplace culture and connect with available community resources.

Since opening its door in May 2006, the program has helped a steadily increasing number of women enter or re-enter the job market by providing career exploration, job retention and job search skills.

“In addition to a women-centred and safe environment, our program offers support through transportation assistance and child care top-ups for eligible women,” explains Darcie. The combination of practical and employment support enables women to identify their skills, create a vision for the future and find their place in the workforce. “We're thrilled to have past clients coming back to visit and share their success stories.”

New sessions start every four weeks. The next start date is Monday March 5th, 2007.
